TARA Spa Therapy Announces a New Affiliation
ADVANCED AYURVEDIC TRAINING
Carmel, CA -- October 2002. Tara Spa Therapy announces a new affiliation with The Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The purpose of this affiliation is to join hands in a common goal to share the ancient eastern wisdom of Ayurveda in a manner that can be understood and embraced in the west. These advanced trainings in Ayurvedic Philosophy, Principles and Practices will serve as an extension to the current TARA Education Program which offers training in over 25 Aromatherapy, Ayurvedic and Classic Spa Treatments.
The Ayurvedic Institute was founded by the renowned Ayurvedic teacher and healer, Vaidya Vasant Lad, who was instrumental in introducing this 5,000 year old Indian health system to the western world. He received his degree in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pune in India in 1968, and a Master of Ayurvedic Science from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya in 1980. He is author of the book, Ayurveda, The Science of Self Healing. Working with Wynn Werner, The Ayurvedic Institute Administrator, an extension program has been created utilizing the Institute's curriculum and faculty. The Institute will also serve as a resource for information regarding the practice of Ayurveda as taught in their curriculum and for additional on-site training including the annual week long summer Panchakarma intensive taught by Vasant Lad himself.
Faculty member Edward Danaher, L.M.T., will teach Abhyanga Massage. Ed, the Ayurvedic Institute's Panchakarma Department Manager, has been studying Ayurveda under Vasant Lad for over fifteen years and has successfully completed the Advanced Studies Program. Abhyanga is a classic massage therapy from India that is typically performed by two therapists working with specific traditional Ayurvedic sequences and techniques. The treatment calms the nervous system and helps to balances the mind, while gently stimulating the circulatory and lymphatic systems.
Jaisri M. Lambert, R.P.P., will offer training in Turiya Therapy: Applied Marma Chiktsa. Jaisri is a graduate of The Ayurvedic Institute and has served as a member of its faculty. She has been teaching natural healing modalities since 1983 and is the founder of Vidya College of California in San Jose. She developed Turiya Therapy, or applied Marma Chiktsa (treatment via trigger point harmonics) under the guidance of Vasant Lad. Turiya Therapy, which has its roots in classical Ayurveda and modern Polarity Therapy, means 'transcendence' and refers to the inner experience of stillness. Therapists learn to identify and rebalance body reflex points and energy pathways. This body-based counseling science studies the psycho-emotional roots of dis-ease and helps to release deep seated stress.
Donald VanHowten will offer Ayurveda for Bodyworkers. Donald is a preeminent bodyworker in Sante Fe, New Mexico and an Institute graduate and faculty member. He is a certified massage instructor, a certified Feldenkrais instructor, a cranial and visceral manipulation therapist, and has been practicing and teaching bodywork and personal development for over 30 years. He is the founder and Director of the Life Impressions Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the author of Ayurveda and Life Impressions Bodywork. This training teaches therapists how to bring the principles of Ayurveda into all of their bodywork, not just specific Ayurvedic treatments, enhancing a spa's massage menu as well as adding depth to their Ayurvedic program. The class will explore the characteristics of the three Ayurvedic constitutions Vata, Pitta, and Kapha and will teach therapists how to develop body work sessions to correct imbalances for each. Strategies for modifying treatments in response to seasonal changes in the body and information on continuing home practice therapies are also included.
Faculty member Michael Dick will teach The Introduction to Ayurveda: A Video Tape and Lecture Series. Michael is an instructor in Ayurvedic Studies including the ancient Ayurvedic texts. He has completed over seven years of advanced study in Ayurveda with additional studies in western herbalism, cranio-sacral therapy, Jyotisha, palmistry and pulse assessment. This training brings the presence (via video) and teaching of Vasant Lad directly to the spa. The series is composed of three 3-day intensives and offers an opportunity for dedicated spa professionals to deepen and broaden their understanding of the fundamental Ayurvedic principles and practices. Each of the hour-long video presentations is followed by an hour of additional instruction and discussion.
Spa Professionals will be encouraged to further expand their knowledge of Ayurveda through the direct experience of attending an annual week long Panchakarma clinic with Vasant Lad at The Ayurvedic Institute. Elements of this practical training in Ayurvedic cleansing programs can be integrated into one's own massage practice or personal health regimen.
